I am iffing and umming about taking the plunge and having an affair. I've met someone I really like, and now we want to take it to the next level. How can I be sure this is the right thing for me... I've never done anything like this before.

I would suggest you arrange a hotel room together but put down the rules that neither of you are going to have sex , yes you can kiss play around maybe have bottle of fizz.
Then after you leave the venue you will see how that felt with you mentally and emotionally, and that may take a day or two , if your full of guilt you know you shouldn’t go the full way next time however it may have felt amazing and euphoric then you know next time what to do

You are uncertain, so it’s a definite NO.
If you do have sex with another, and the uncertainty creeps in, you might attempt to salve your conscience by confessing.
And you should never ever confess. That way marriage break up follows.
Never kiss and tell, the other party deserves your discretion every bit as much as you .

If you are umming and ahhing (I think that is the correct term) - then No do not do it.
This is one of the reasons as well as younger men (see previous threads) I avoid newbies like the plague.
