To avoid any risks(!) make it thoughtful and perishable, e.g. edible....its a rookie mistake to give jewellry, handbag, watch, etc. The thought should count. If your IE partner is expecting gifts...that is a bit of a red flag. Its suggests the quality of the encounter may be measured against the quality of the gift....

Old I.E's, like the ghost of Christmas past - they don't stay down and they don't stay dead! I couldn't decide whether it was a compliment or an insult to begin with, but with a number now having tried to ' reconnect' there "just wanted to say hello" is transparently a booty call, with Christmas bells on.
