About Me:

In many ways, I have a charmed life. I'm a writer so I work from home and my time is my own. I interview fascinating people as part of my job, I enjoy the company of others and I have some very good friends close by. I'm healthy and reasonably fit.

But, but… I'm coming out of a long-term relationship and I'm feeling a bit bruised. Life passes so quickly and I don't want to waste another year without at least some occasional female company. I'm far from ready to commit to another potential life partner just yet but I'd like to feel close to one particular person. Which is perhaps a good time to emphasise that I am NOT a player. Strange as it may seem, given the nature of this site, I'm not unfaithful by nature and I'm not looking to add notches to the metaphorical bedpost. Not more than one, anyway…

Confession time: I have been on this site before, a long time ago, well before beginning the relationship with my soon-to-be-ex. I found it a fascinating experience and I met some really interesting people, one of whom had a massive impact on my life and who has remained a close (but now strictly platonic) friend. Meeting someone here is not all about the 'S' word – although that's a hugely important element, and it would be disingenuous to pretend otherwise – and an intellectual connection is vital. That, and not taking yourself too seriously!

My age really is as stated and being totally honest from the start is crucial, in my view. I'm a little over six feet tall (other parts are in proportion…) and, while I've developed a bit of a dad-bod since I was last here, I'd like to think – or, more accurately, kid myself – that my height helps to compensate for that. My ex was mad keen on walking and it's something I've come to enjoy, too; we did the Coast-to-Coast walk a few years ago and I can still manage a 12-mile yomp in any weather. Camping is not for me, though – give me a decent hotel anytime!

Past experience suggests that wittering on here about favourite types of music or films is irrelevant to whether you're compatible with someone, so I won't do that. Having different preferences simply makes for new experiences and new discoveries. I'll often pick up a few CDs – yes, I'm old enough to still listen to CDs – in charity shops from artists I've never heard of, just to find out what they're like. I read a hell of a lot, mostly popular fiction because I'm doing it to relax rather than improve myself, but the writing has to be excellent even if the plot is crap (some of the early Jack Reacher novels, which I absolutely love, are perfect examples). I've loads of other interests, one or two tending towards the geeky side, but I'll tell you about those should we ever get to know each other better.

To end on a boring but practical note, I'm very flexible about when and for how long I can meet up, including nights away, and I don't mind driving a reasonable distance.

Ideal Partner:

Again, from past experience, I've found the kind of person you may end up clicking with is likely to be completely different from the one you imagined, so I'm pretty laidback in terms of preferred looks, build etc (though regarding the latter my inclination would be towards slim or average). Likewise with age; it seems less and less relevant these days. By far the most important attribute in a partner is, I think, a quick wit and great sense of humour. Being able to talk and laugh is absolutely the key to any lasting affair – as Benjamin Braddock says to Mrs Robinson in The Graduate, 'Do you think we could liven it up with a little conversation for a change?' And look how that turned out when she wouldn't… (Oh bugger, I've started wittering on about favourite movies.)
